Abu Dhabi is a very modern paradox. A tiny Arabian emirate sitting on top of some of the world's biggest oil reserves, the city has been transformed in just 16 years from an obscure backwater of palm-frond shacks into a high-rise megalopolis of burnished skyscrapers and equally sky-high ambitions. The ever expanding city remains one of the world's leading oil producers.
